It started on Twitter...
In March of 2013, Matthew Coker started a simple twitter account, @BackRowBaptist, with the goal of poking fun at himself and his fellow Christians in a lighthearted way. He was originally anonymous, but decided to reveal his identity in early 2014, and with that, his difficult testimony. Following this (and even building up several months beforehand), God had lined up several in need of honest advice, counseling, accountability, and more. Suddenly, a simple comedy Twitter account began growing into a real ministry that ministers to struggling Christians trying to be their best for God. Afterall, that IS where the "Back Row" name comes from - it's where all the struggling believers tend to gravitate towards.
Back Row Online
In the first big expansion, Back Row Baptist launched Back Row Online, a blog and video production ministry that worked hard to offer Humor & Healing for the Saved but Still Human. Matthew even went on a short speaking tour at different churches, Celebrate Recovery's, and even a conference.
Return to Form
As God closed some doors and opened others, Back Row Online went by the wayside and the focus was once again solely on Comedy - this time as the primary method for encouraging others. And with that, the adoption of Proverbs 17:22 as our ministry verse: A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. (ESV)
Our ministry has branched out into several exciting ventures, including our own radio station, party games, books, and much more!
